Just as heart attack, stroke is ‘brain attack’. It is a serious medical emergency and needs immediate medical attention when strikes. In medical terms it is called cerebrovascular accident and is a sudden impairment of the cerebral circulation in one or more than one blood vessel/s supplying blood to the brain. Now in simple words stroke happens when blood flow to one or more area of the brain is deprived or cut off, of blood flow through the blood vessels.

Some fast facts about stroke:

  1. When stroke strikes, the brain is cut off from proper supply of oxygen and nutrients, thereby, causing the brain cells to die.
  2. If not attended and treated early, cam cause serious damages to the brain.
  3. The most effective and valued way to prevent stroke from happening is by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and paying attention to dietary intakes that treats the underlying conditions that causes the risk.
  4. All treatments and diets depends on the type of stroke.
  5. Healthy eating can improve not only your health but also reduces the risk of having another stroke.

Diet, Nutrition and Stroke
Diet and nutrition are the key to recovery after a stroke attack. Preventing another stroke to happen and in order to stay healthy it is important to choose healthy foods in order to control weight and blood pressure and also helps in post stroke therapy.

Including these food groups in daily diet and enjoying nutritious food as mentioned here:

  1. Wide variety of fruits and vegetables of different colour with legumes and beans.
  2. Cereals mostly wholegrain and high in fiber such as rice, pasta, oats, quinoa, barley and cereals.
  3. Fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, seeds, legumes, beans, lean meats and poultry.
  4. Milk, yoghurt, cheese and other alternatives that are low in fat.
  5. Adequate quantity of daily water intake.

Healthy eating post stroke:

Fruits and vegetables: antioxidants in fruits and vegetables reduce damage to blood vessels. The potassium content helps in the reduction and control of blood pressure. The fibers in fruits and vegetables lowers cholesterol levels. Folate - found in green leafy vegetables are known to reduce the chances of stroke. Fibers and folate are also found in whole grains and cereals.

Dairy products: a rich source of potassium and calcium, are known for their blood pressure controlling capabilities. Calcium rich dairy alternatives like soy and rice milk is also beneficial. Other sources of calcium apart from dairy are fish with bones, tofu and almonds.

Nutritional tips post stroke

  1. Always choose and prefer to cook and eat food with very less salt (sodium).
  2. Always eat diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
  3. Chose to eat whole grain and high fiber foods.
  4. Prefer low-fat dairy products.
  5. Select lean meats and poultry and cook them without saturated or trans fats.
  6. If you consume alcohol, take in moderation – maximum of one to two drinks a day.
  7. Always prefer to have homemade foods.
  8. Post stroke you might have chewing problem, cut smaller pieces of what you are preparing and have slowly and comfortably.
  9. Drink plenty of water.
